ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for Small Business: Which to Pick
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are all good. None is dramatically better than the others for general small business work — but they differ in ways that matter once you start using them daily. Here's how we help clients pick.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Strengths: the largest ecosystem of integrations, the strongest custom GPT/Assistant tooling, and the deepest 3rd-party support. Best general-purpose small business default for teams that want plenty of plug-and-play options.
Watch outs: different model versions can behave differently; team members will sometimes pick the wrong model for the task without guidance.
Claude (Anthropic)
Strengths: excellent at long-form writing, code review, and following nuanced instructions. Tends to be the best choice for legal, professional services, and content-heavy workflows.
Watch outs: ecosystem is smaller than ChatGPT's, and certain consumer plug-ins are missing. Not always the best for "agent" workflows that browse and click.
Gemini (Google)
Strengths: deep integration with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive). If your business is all-in on Workspace, Gemini's "right-where-you-work" AI is hard to beat.
Watch outs: ecosystem outside Google is thinner, and quality on certain creative tasks lags ChatGPT and Claude.
How we usually recommend choosing
- All-in on Google Workspace? Start with Gemini.
- Microsoft 365 shop, generalist needs? Start with ChatGPT (Enterprise).
- Heavy writing, legal, or document analysis? Start with Claude.
- Heavy automation/workflow goals? Start with ChatGPT for the broader integration ecosystem.
Don't run all three in production
Standardize on one as your primary platform and add a second only when a specific workflow demands it. Your team's productivity gains come from depth with one tool, not breadth across three.
What about pricing?
For small teams, all three offer per-seat pricing in a similar range — typically $20–$30 per user per month for individual plans and $25–$60 per user per month for business / enterprise tiers with privacy guarantees. Total cost differences are usually less important than choosing the right tool for the workflow.
How each handles real small-business workflows
Pricing pages are easy to compare. Workflow fit is harder. Here's how the three tend to land on the workflows we deploy most often for Denver small businesses.
- Inbound email triage and reply drafting. ChatGPT and Claude are roughly tied; ChatGPT has the edge if your team uses Outlook or Gmail with a plugin, Claude has the edge if you want longer, more nuanced drafts and are routing through an automation tool.
- Document review and clause extraction. Claude wins consistently. It handles long documents better than the other two and follows custom playbooks more reliably.
- Sales call summaries and CRM updates. ChatGPT, mostly because the ecosystem of meeting recorders that integrate cleanly with it is the largest.
- Internal Q&A on company SOPs and policies. All three work, but Gemini's tight integration with Google Drive makes it the easiest to set up if your SOPs already live in Docs.
- Spreadsheet analysis and chart generation. Gemini if your data lives in Sheets; ChatGPT (with Advanced Data Analysis) for ad hoc CSV work.
- Code and technical documentation. Claude has the edge here for most teams.
- Customer-facing chatbots. ChatGPT's Assistants API and the broader ecosystem of chatbot builders make it the easiest path for a small business that wants a production deployment.
Privacy and data handling
For business use, all three offer enterprise tiers that contractually exclude your prompts and data from being used to train shared models. This is the single most important configuration to get right. A team using a free consumer plan and pasting client information into the chat is taking on real risk; a team on the equivalent enterprise tier is not. Differences between the three at the enterprise tier are mostly about audit logging, retention controls, and SSO/SCIM rather than the underlying privacy guarantee.
For regulated industries (healthcare, legal, finance), you'll want to verify each provider's current attestations — SOC 2, HIPAA BAA availability, residency options — as part of selection. These change quickly enough that any specific list we publish will be out of date within months.
Switching costs are real
Once your team has built up custom GPTs, Projects, prompt libraries, and integrations on a primary platform, switching costs more than people expect. We've helped multiple clients migrate, and each time the workflow rebuild and retraining costs land in the $5,000–$25,000 range depending on the depth of usage. That's a strong argument for spending a little more time on the initial decision rather than picking the cheapest seat license and discovering 12 months later it's the wrong fit.
Our default recommendation in 2026
If we have to pick one for a generalist Denver small business with no strong existing ecosystem, we usually recommend ChatGPT Team or Enterprise as the primary, paired with Claude for document-heavy roles. Gemini comes in when the business is fully on Google Workspace and wants AI inside Docs, Sheets, and Gmail without changing tools.
That said, this is the kind of recommendation that ages. By 2027, the gaps between these three will have narrowed further and a fourth contender (or a wrapped-model offering inside a productivity suite) may be the better default. Build your AI program in a way that doesn't lock you to one vendor.
